Tibian levels represent the experience of a character. The more experience, the more levels a character will have. All characters start at level 1 when they first enter the game, in the Tutorial Island. They gain experience by killing monsters or by completing certain quests, and with the experience comes the levels. At level 8 a character is allowed to leave Rookgaard by talking to The Oracle. There used to be another statue called The Gatekeeper which used to be on the Premium area of Rookgaard but this was removed in the 8.2 update.

The amount of experience needed for the next level will increase for every level a character will get. As far as known there is no limit to the number of levels that can be gained. On the official website is the full experience table where is listed how much experience is needed to reach a certain level.
When Eternal Oblivion reached level 270, there was a "tibia server database, level limit" that prevented him from gaining certain advancements for his level.
On 6 March 2007, Mateusz Dragon Wielki was the first player to reach level 300.
On 24 December 2008, Lord'Paulistinha was the first player to reach level 400.
On 23 November 2010, Tomurka was the first player to reach level 500.
On 10 May 2012, Maurolkit was the first player to reach level 600.
Players often celebrate certain levels as landmarks. This is a list of levels that have some significance, and why.
- 8: Beginning of Mainland adventures.
- 20: Vocation Promotion, quests Desert Dungeon Quest.
- 40: Quests Orc Fort Quest, the djinn war (green and blue).
- 41 - 42: 1,000,000 experience.
- 50: Quests Black Knight Quest, Deeper Fibula Quest, Thieves Guild Quest.
- 60: Access to Demona.
- 63: (Knight) 1,000 hitpoints.
- 70: Vampire Shield Quest.
- 80: Quests: The Pits of Inferno Quest, Wrath of the Emperor Quest and Behemoth Quest.
- 90: (Paladin) 1,000 hitpoints
- 100: First triple digit level, quest The Inquisition Quest.
- 171: (Druid / Sorcerer) 1,000 hitpoints.
- 200: Second triple digit level, (Knight) 1,000 mana.
